Probably a bad title because I can't tell you where to photograph Moose.  I can tell you I wouldn't go to Portland thinking I would see a Moose.  I can suggest how I look for moose. My best luck for seeing moose has been out of a boat.  My favorite season is September when moose are going into their rut.  (late September, early October). Bulls are looking for cows. Cows are pursued by bulls. By the end of the first week in October, the rut ends and moose return to their lives of eating and resting as they prepare for winter. Photography is spectacular because by September their antler growth has completed and the velvet dries and falls off.

Where and when do I look for Moose?  Early Morning, late evening.  I go to the North Maine Woods and Aroostook County.

Photo Hints

Mark Picard, a wildlife photographer specializing in Moose photography taught me to have my camera ready with "Drive By" settings.  A moose might not wait for you to fiddle with the settings.  He also taught me to have the speed high enough to make the moose sharp not blurry. The camera is in reach, maybe on my lap.  I am using auto ISO and do not allow the speed to go below 500.  I have my longest lens on my camera.  The F stop is set to F5.6 or F8.

As a side note.  I have a "Little Black Book"!  The boring reason for the book is to write notes of what to have/do in what situation.  I also have a list of what I need for what I am doing,  I have downloaded the camera manual on my I pad. I also downloaded a book by David Bush about my Sony.  David has published many how-to books for many cameras.  Why do I like David?  He will say there are many ways to do the same thing but this is the way he does it.  For me, that helps.  On lazy, sitting on the couch moments, I read Davids book, fiddle with the settings, take practice pictures of my toes, and write the results in my black book.  Google David Bush (your camera) for a look.

Where to Photograph - Ecotat Gardens and Trails

Ecotat Garden and Trails

One of the hidden jewels near Bangor, in Hermon, is Ecotat Gardens.  The acreage is home to over 55 gardens containing 280 varieties of trees, over 1500 varieties of perennials, and an abundance of animals, birds and insects.  The gardens are free to the public and photographers are more than welcome to use the gardens whenever they want during daylight hours. They appreciate donations.  I love it here as a place to practice different flower photography techniques.  I also have seen the gardens used for family photos.

“The mission of Ecotat Trust is to preserve and expand the gardens and trails for the enjoyment and use of future generations. The name “Ecotat” was formed by combining portions of the words “ecological” and “habitat” – words describing the 91 acres of land located on Route 2 in Hermon, Maine, at the intersection with Annis Road at the top of Miller Hill.”

Ecotat Gardens and Trails
Photographer Tips

* Don’t just stick to eye-level shots. Strive to be unique.

* Shoot from a higher angle. This is actually quite easy to execute. Especially since you’re taller than most flowers.

* Go lower. You’ll have to stay really close to the ground, but the shots you get are definitely worth it.

* To help you stay clean while shooting, bring a rag or an old yoga mat you can lay on.

Wait for the flowers to be still.

Camera settings suggestions. 95 percent of the time I shoot at aperture priority.   I love a soft/blurred background behind flowers.  I will shoot at F2.8 and F5.  Blurred backgrounds make the flower stand out. If you are outdoors and it is a bright day, consider underexposing slightly by -1 stop, to bring out the details of the flower, the leaves and stem.

Too much wind?  Moving flowers is another technique.  To make a swirling flower set your camera at its lowest ISO (50).  F18 and set the camera speed around (ish) 1 second. Using a ND filter also helps but is not needed.  This is just a crazy fun.  The method.  Move your camera and chimp.  Try different swirl movements and pick out what you like best.

Where to Photograph - Blue Hill Fair

The Blue Hill Fair is a win, win place to photograph. You will find lots of quality things to take pictures of from farm animals to people.  The non-photographers will enjoy the sites and (Mike) the food.  " A Down to Earth Country Fair. Always scheduled around Labor Day weekend".

As many know I am a horse girl from way back.  When Mike and I got married, instead of building a house, we built a barn.  The horses lived downstairs and we lived upstairs.  We had a plexiglass window in the living room floor to keep an eye on the pregnant mare when she was going into labor.  That said, I love workhorses!  My favorite place to see workhorses is at the Blue Hill Fair.  The most interesting part is seeing how loved they are.  Last year there was a very elderly, very frail, farmer with over 2 tons of horses.  I bet he didn't weigh 120 pounds. When he was done with his pull the crowd gave him a standing ovation.  It was impressive.

In addition there are many other things to photograph, sheep, oxen pulls, cattle, night lights on the rides, dogs, and lots of people.  Check out the schedule on the website.

http://www.bluehillfair.com

Photographers Tip

Keep an eye on the background.  I have liked to stand at the gate where the animals come in and out.  In this spot I have a clear view of the horses coming towards me with just a food stand in the background to show we are at a fair,  I use a fast shutter speed (over 500) and shoot near f 5.6 to blur the background.  I use my ISO to bring the shutter speed over 500.  You will need to do this on a grey, overcast day.  Why a fast shutter speed?  In shooting animals I am looking for sharpness.  In my opinion, the horses have a lot of moving parts that look wrong when they are blurred.  My opinion,  your photos you do what you like.  Bring your longest lens but don't sweat only having a short lens.  You are able to get close.

Beware! There is lots of dust.  I wrap my camera in a towel when I'm not using it.

Have fun!

Where to Photograph - Hastings Falls Hastings

Hastings Falls

Taking I 95 North a couple of hours from Bangor into Aroostook County you will come to the town of Patten and the interesting Patten Lumber Museum  just outside the town. The Museum is home to many outbuilding depicting the life of the men who lived in the Maine woods cutting trees/lumber to be shipped all over the world.  I always marvel at how difficult a lumberman’s life was.

Traveling farther north to the Hastings Falls Rd in Merrill, ME is the very unique Hastings Falls.  The Hastings Falls Rd is an ok road but I’m not sure I’d bring anything with a low clearance.  The road sort-of-ends and becomes a 4 wheeler trail.  The hike is approximately a 1/2 mile, easy to follow and not too steep until you get to the falls.  Where I shot the pool at the bottom of the falls was steep but there were sturdy trees to brace on. Hastings Falls isn’t big, but it is very much worth photographing.  What I loved about the falls, was the large river eddy flowing in a circular upstream direction.

Photography Tip.

I think all waterfalls are best on an overcast day.  That being said we were here in the afternoon on a cloudy day,  I would wait until the sun was behind the cloud to shoot. I used a neutral density filter to give myself control over exposure and the creative control over shutter speed. The slow shutter speed was able to slow up the eddy enough to show a full swirl.  I changed my ISO and F stop to try different shutter speeds.  My favorite was 5 seconds.

18mm lens was on a tripod using a polarizer and a 10 stop ND filter.

5 seconds at F/11. 50 ISO

Where to Photograph - Leonard’s Mills Leonard's Mills
       Inside the historic Mill

Eastern Maine Camera Club is starting a new Blog series highlighting places to shoot around Maine and beyond.  The hope is to create ideas of where to find a place to make your creative side be very happy.  Maine is a beautiful place.

Maine Forest and Logging Museum. "Located on Blackman Stream in Bradley, Leonard’s Mills is at the actual site of an early pioneer settlement, identified by the remains of a stone dam and the foundations of several houses. Today, Leonard’s Mills is “alive” once again, as the Museum is represented by an authentic reconstruction of a logging and milling community of the 1790s."

Photo Tips

The grounds are open every day during daylight hours. Blackman Stream winds through the grounds with a historic mill and covered bridge.  Bring a polarizer.  The stream makes a nice leading line to the buildings.  On Thursday mornings until October the buildings are open.  I have practiced HDR in the building.  Bring a tripod.

Directions

From Bangor and Brewer, take ME Route 9 from Brewer 4 miles towards Eddington. Turn onto ME Route 178 and follow towards Milford for another 4.5 miles. A large sign will be on the left but the entrance and Government Road will be on the the right directly across from the sign.

Bangor State Fair 2019 Photo Contest & Exhibit It’s time to prepare your photos for the 2019 Photo Contest and Exhibit at the Bangor State Fair! The official rules can be downloaded from the fair’s web site at the following address:

2019 Photo Contest Rules, Entry Form and Photo Tickets

More information regarding contests can be found on the fair’s web site at the following address:

http://www.bangorstatefair.com/contestspremiums

Eastern Maine Camera Club members will be available to accept entries at the South East Entry of the Cross Insurance Center on Monday, July 22nd from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. There will be signs to guide you. You can also mail your entries, details for that can be found in the Contest Rules (link above).

Every year we regretfully end up turning some entries away so please do take the time to read the rules.  The most common reason for photos being turned away is improper matting or size.  It’s really important for your photos to be matted according to the rules. Proper matting will help protect your images from damage, and facilitate the way we hang the photos.

Photo tickets are very important and often misunderstood. We often have over 200 photos to process in one evening. This identifying system allows us to judge the photos anonymously, then quickly pull down the ticket for display, so the photographer can be recognized, without marking up your image or matt.

Unfortunately tickets can sometimes fall off, making it impossible for us to know who the photo belongs too.  For that reason, your name and address must be on the back of the photo prior to entry in addition to the tickets mentioned above.  Missing this step causes a significant delay for everyone.

I’ve given you some key points but this is no substitute for reading the entire rules.  Please read the entire rules to help us make this an enjoyable experience for everyone.  I’ll post the link again so you don’t even have to scroll back up.

2019 Photo Contest Rules, Entry Form and Photo Tickets

We at Eastern Maine Camera Club will do our best to answer any question and help you in any way we can.  You can reach us via email at: info@easternmainecameraclub.org

Now, in closing here’s a look at the adult categories for this year’s contest:

1. People

2. Children

3. Nature—the “hand of man” cannot be evident in the picture.

4. Animals

5. Flowers

6. Open—Any subject matter in good taste.

7. Maine—Photos that symbolize Maine and were taken in Maine.

8. Panoramas— Subject matter is completely open, but this category will pose a unique challenge. You may create a panoramic image, either horizontal or vertical, of any dimensions, up to a maximum width or height of 40 inches, but the challenging part is, the total image area, Height X Width, must not exceed 320 inches (the area of a standard 16 X 20 print). This means you will have to carefully plan your photo's composition so the image will fit within an aspect ratio that conforms to the above width and area, rather than width and height. Please study the following description of what we will consider an acceptable panorama to be. A "panorama" is defined as an image having at least a 1 to 2 (1/2) aspect ratio (twice as wide as it is high) though the most common ratio is 1/3. For example, a 1/2 ratio panoramic landscape photo could be printed to 20 inches wide, but would be limited to a 10 inch height, and would have an area of 200 inches. Similarly, if your photo can be composed in a 1/3 format, you could print it 30 inches wide, but the height would still be 10 inches, and the area would be 300 inches. As a final example, if you wanted to utilize the maximum 40 inch width allowed, you would have to compose your photo in a 1/5 ratio, making the height 8 inches to get the maximum area of 320 inches.

Prize money and ribbons in all the above categories include: First Place, $20.00; Second Place, $15.00; Third Place, $10.00; Ribbons only will be awarded for Honorable Mention.

The only category for Youth entries this year is Open, which is “any subject matter in good taste.” Any Youth photographer (16 and under) may enter up to two color AND two black and white prints. Please indicate on your registration form how many prints of each type you are entering.

Prize money and ribbons the Youth categories include: First Place, $20.00; Second Place, $15.00; Third Place, $10.00; Ribbons only for Honorable Mention.

Good luck, but most of all, have fun!

Opening Night! As of this writing, the summer has been lovely – almost enough rain, lots of sunshine. Enough fog to take photos on the coast, enough sunshine to ride the Sunrise Trail, taking photos of osprey. The old folks used to call Daylight Savings “Fast Time” and it seems that summer does go much faster than the winter months. That said, it is now time to think about the fall and semi-monthly meetings.

Our first meeting this fall will be held on Sept 6th, 2018. This meeting is for members and those who plan to join. This provides us an opportunity to re-connect with old friends and meet new ones. Members should have received a letter in the mail with details. If you are planning to join and would like to attend please contact us by sending an e-mail to info@eastermainecameraclub.org.

During the past year, in addition to our field trip schedule, with guidance from Kevin Doyle, we initiated an Instagram Challenge, where members can upload photos and choose favorites. We are looking forward to learning what our Field Trip Guru, Don Darling, will include for interesting and challenging trips this year.

Please send dues to Treasurer Larry Sherwood, using the form found at this link: Click here for Membership Form.  Keeping dues current enables you to compete in competitions.

Finally, I want to recognize the wonderful job that Jeanne Caron has done as President of the Club. Her personality, cheerfulness and patience are an example for all of us.

To a wonderful year.

Vincent Lawrence to Speak at Oct. 5th Meeting

On Thursday Oct 5th at 6:00 PM Eastern Maine Camera Club will be hosting Vincent Lawrence of Acadia Images Photography Workshops as our guest speaker at the Bangor Parks and Rec Building on Main Street in Bangor. Vincent's presentation is free and open to the public. So, please come and enjoy his presentation on Landscape and Panorama Photography.

Panoramas have long been a part of the photographer’s tool box. At their inception they required special cameras and film. In the digital age software has opened up a ton of new opportunities. Today panoramic photography is very accessible thanks to programs like Photoshop and Lightroom. As we look at the benefits and challenges of this age-old technique you will become excited to try it yourself. If you have already started shooting panoramas this is a chance to learn some of the nuances and pitfalls of the process. You’ll have a chance to look at the gear and processing required for high-quality images. Photographer Vincent Lawrence is a native of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, Maine. An avid adventurer, he has taken his camera into remote wilderness areas around the world. Vincent has been a Photoshop user since 1999: post-processing ranks high on his priority list of photographic workflow and he thoroughly enjoys teaching on the topic. He owns and operates Acadia Images Photography Workshops, teaching nature and landscape photography in Acadia, including special classes on panoramas and night sky photography.

Kim Stone Scheduled to Speak at May 4th Meeting

The Eastern Maine Camera Club will meet 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4th, at the Bangor Parks and Recreation Building, 647 Main St. Guest speaker will be Kim Stone.

Thanks to club member John Edwards for providing the detailed info below:

On May 4th our guest speaker will be Kim Stone. I credit Kim for inspiring me to get back into photography for love of the art rather than just a way to record... my family and life events.

Kim Stone’s love of photography is inspired by her family and one other thing; horses. Kim is a Maine native who has been riding since age four. She began actively taking photographs in High School and worked as a sports photographer in college developing her own film. Many of her photos at Gordon College were selected for publication to include the
yearbook.

Over the years, family vacations in Maine created exciting photo opportunities and a great learning environment focusing the camera on her active family. More recently, Kim has been working summers in the saddle, roping, doctoring, and handling cattle on a large ranch in Oregon. Ranch life allowed her to continue developing her photography skills highlighting open spaces and the life of the cowboy. Her love of horses and working as a cowboy alongside them helped her create intensely dramatic images.

Kim ‘s photography has been featured nationally and internationally in several publications including, The Paint Horse Journal, Western Horseman, American Quarter Horse Journal, Eclectic Horseman, and Horseman of Czech Republic well as the following books: The Alvord Ranch Experience by Kim Stone, Cow Horse Confidence by Martin Black, Evidence Based Horsemanship by Martin Black and Dr. Steve Peters. Kim currently lives in Brunswick, Maine.

Please be sure to come to this special club meeting and listen to Kim tell her story and show us her beautiful images of the wide open spaces of the West and the people who work hard and live there.
