May Speaker - Rob Sylvan

May 2nd is our next meeting and we have an amazing educational opportunity. Rob Sylvan will be working in the Development Module of Lightroom to show us how to process our images in the preeminent image processing software. Rob Sylvan is a freelance photographer, author, educator, and aspiring beekeeper. He is also the Lightroom Help Desk Specialist for KelbyOne, and an adjunct faculty in the Visual Arts department of NHTI. Rob answers all of the Lightroom questions on the KelbyOne Help Desk and contributes to Lightroom Magazine and lightroomkillertips.com. He is the author of many Lightroom and photography related books, eBooks, videos, and the soon to be released “Lightroom Classic for Dummies." Rob has been a guest presenter at the New England Camera Club Counsel Conference, Photoshop World, and PhotoPlus Expo speaking on Lightroom, Photoshop, and Wacom tablets.

Colleen has been the Artist in Residence with Acadia National Park three times, which enabled her to publish "Photographing Acadia National Park: The Essential Guide to When, Where and How" in February 2014. Copyright Baerbel LoSaccoBorn and raised in East Germany Baerbel came to the US in 1995 as an AuPair. She met her husband while working for a family in CT, and moved to the US permanently in 1997. She worked as research scientist for a large German based pharmaceutical company in CT. After falling in love with the state on their first visit over 20 years ago, in 2013 she and her family moved to Maine. Baerbel bought first camera with pocket money when she was 10 years old.

If you have ever visited the State of Maine Photographers FaceBook page you have undoughtedly seen and admired her work. She is a frequent contributer whos posts rival the top photographers in the group. Her photographs often come from her back yard right here in the State of Maine. She has a way of turning ordinary subjects into extrodinary images.

Thursday night Baerbel will be speaking to us about “Macro Photography in your own back yard". Please join us and bring a friend.

Eastern Maine Camera Club’s guest lecture series is proud to present John and Cynthia Orcutt. John and Cynthia will share their story, their art and images from throughout their journey and from their new photo book ‘Enduring Heights - The High Peaks of Maine’. As always our Guest lectures are free and open to the public. So, join us at the Bangor Parks and Recreation building on Main Street Thursday night November 2nd at 6:30 PM

John and Cynthia Orcutt are fine-art nature photographers and avid outdoor enthusiasts. Following distinguished careers as an architect and landscape architect team, they have pursued their interest in highlighting the need for active preservation of fragile places. Exploring Maine’s High Peaks with camera in hand, their goal is to raise awareness that a place with much to give creates a cause for much to save. Through their photography, John and Cynthia illustrate the irreplaceable beauty and isolation of this rich and storied place. They express the inherent beauty of areas endangered by public access and frequent visitation. Their work is a call for us all to take a role in the stewardship of our natural heritage and to participate in ongoing conservation efforts in our daily lives. John is a past member of the board of directors of Maine Huts & Trails and the Wolfe’s Neck Farm Foundation. Cynthia is a commissioner on the Maine Arts Commission, a member of the BikeMaine Steering Committee, and a director of the High Peaks Cultural Coalition. She is a trustee emeritus of Waynflete School. They live in Kingfield and Portland, Maine.

Vincent Lawrence to Speak at Oct. 5th Meeting

On Thursday Oct 5th at 6:00 PM Eastern Maine Camera Club will be hosting Vincent Lawrence of Acadia Images Photography Workshops as our guest speaker at the Bangor Parks and Rec Building on Main Street in Bangor. Vincent's presentation is free and open to the public. So, please come and enjoy his presentation on Landscape and Panorama Photography.

Panoramas have long been a part of the photographer’s tool box. At their inception they required special cameras and film. In the digital age software has opened up a ton of new opportunities. Today panoramic photography is very accessible thanks to programs like Photoshop and Lightroom. As we look at the benefits and challenges of this age-old technique you will become excited to try it yourself. If you have already started shooting panoramas this is a chance to learn some of the nuances and pitfalls of the process. You’ll have a chance to look at the gear and processing required for high-quality images. Photographer Vincent Lawrence is a native of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, Maine. An avid adventurer, he has taken his camera into remote wilderness areas around the world. Vincent has been a Photoshop user since 1999: post-processing ranks high on his priority list of photographic workflow and he thoroughly enjoys teaching on the topic. He owns and operates Acadia Images Photography Workshops, teaching nature and landscape photography in Acadia, including special classes on panoramas and night sky photography.

Kim Stone Scheduled to Speak at May 4th Meeting

The Eastern Maine Camera Club will meet 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4th, at the Bangor Parks and Recreation Building, 647 Main St. Guest speaker will be Kim Stone. 

Thanks to club member John Edwards for providing the detailed info below:

On May 4th our guest speaker will be Kim Stone. I credit Kim for inspiring me to get back into photography for love of the art rather than just a way to record... my family and life events.

Kim Stone’s love of photography is inspired by her family and one other thing; horses. Kim is a Maine native who has been riding since age four. She began actively taking photographs in High School and worked as a sports photographer in college developing her own film. Many of her photos at Gordon College were selected for publication to include the
yearbook.

Over the years, family vacations in Maine created exciting photo opportunities and a great learning environment focusing the camera on her active family. More recently, Kim has been working summers in the saddle, roping, doctoring, and handling cattle on a large ranch in Oregon. Ranch life allowed her to continue developing her photography skills highlighting open spaces and the life of the cowboy. Her love of horses and working as a cowboy alongside them helped her create intensely dramatic images.

Kim ‘s photography has been featured nationally and internationally in several publications including, The Paint Horse Journal, Western Horseman, American Quarter Horse Journal, Eclectic Horseman, and Horseman of Czech Republic well as the following books: The Alvord Ranch Experience by Kim Stone, Cow Horse Confidence by Martin Black, Evidence Based Horsemanship by Martin Black and Dr. Steve Peters. Kim currently lives in Brunswick, Maine.

The Eastern Maine Camera Club will meet 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov 3rd, at the Bangor Parks and Recreation Building, 647 Main St. Guest speaker will be Peter Jones, speaking on Cave Photography. 

Peter has put together a show that will have something for everyone. How often have you seen photos from deep inside the earth?! In his own words...

"It is a mix of some of my better images over the years, some history of work that I have done at Carlsbad Caverns NP, some of the more complicated images I’ve made and details of how the images were created. There’s also a very brief introduction as to how I got into caving, cave photography and being a potter (my full time career for 43 years). At the end of the presentation, I chose one image that I took a couple of years ago to illustrate all the post capture processing I did on it to become the final image. I will also bring along a lot of gear I use to take my images. The final thing I will do during the presentation is to take questions from people."  "...I don’t want to overwhelm with technical detail, but I also do want to show that some of what I do requires advanced knowledge and techniques to make it appear easy and seamless. In short, it should provide something for everyone. Certainly what I do is likely to be very different from what most photographers do, so it should be a nice sidetrack for people to learn about."
